Check Under The Bed!
Seriously, go check – right now…
What did you see? Well, if you are like most clients I work with, a ton of dust! Underneath the bed is one of the hardest places to reach when cleaning and one of the most often forgotten. Make sure you are cleaning under your bed a few times a year. Literally, pull everything out from underneath your bed and vacuum. You will be amazed when you see how much dust gets collected under there and since you spend 6-8 hours a day on top of that area, don’t you want it to be clean?
Okay, on to the organization aspect. Many people don’t fully utilize the entire space under their beds, that’s a shame! There are many ways to utilize the space underneath your bed, starting with the furniture you buy. Many bed frames nowadays come with drawers underneath the bed and I love these! It is the perfect place to store extra sheets, out of season clothes or even extra toiletries! The possibilities are endless, it’s the perfect overflow.
While working at a client’s house, I saw the coolest piece of bedroom furniture, the most practical child’s bed I have ever seen! At first glance, it was a trundle bed, you know, underneath the bed another one pulls out – perfect for sleepovers. However, I was confused because this client had no second mattress. That’s when it happened. Instead of another bed, the movers put in three wooden dividers and the space that rolled out from under the bed turned into three HUGE drawers that rolled as one unit. Since the beds were full-size, not twins, this was a ton of storage space for stuffed animals and toys. The best part, is that if you change your mind as the kids get older, you simply remove the dividers and add a mattress, genius!
If you already have your furniture and it doesn’t have one of these functions, not to fear! There are still many solutions to utilize that space. Since I love to travel, I have acquired many suitcases over the years. In past apartments, I have put my bed on bed risers so that I can fit all of the suitcases, a ladder and an ironing board underneath.
Many retailers also sell clear plastic bins that are long instead of the typical square/rectangular shape. These are ideal for sliding underneath beds. Some items that are perfect candidates for this space are wedding dresses, out of season clothing and wrapping paper. Again, the options here are limitless, pick something that fits in the bin, label the bin and slide it under! Don’t waste all of the valuable space under your bed when it could be used for so much more!
