Keeping a personal menu is a great resource for so many reasons! First of all, it prevents you from eating the same thing each week because you can see everything you know how to cook easily at a glance without having to remember everything. Your menu (others might call it a recipe book) is also essential when planning out Grocery Shopping. Plus, it is way more fun to pick what you want out of a personalized menu than out of a recipe box full of index cards!
Each recipe in the menu book has its own page. This makes it easy to take it out when in use and easy to change the order of the recipes at any time. It also allows you to update a recipe easily without affecting the pagination. The pages themselves look very similar to the recipe pages on the site, each with a picture, source, ingredients and directions.
The first step to adding a new recipe is research. I use a few cookbooks in my home, a few Facebook® pages and of course,Pinterest to find new recipes. Pinterest is a great resource that allows me to add new recipes to my board whenever I feel like it. If I only have a few minutes here and there, I can pin the recipes for later. Once a month, I go through and add recipes to the ‘To Try’ section of our menu, pulling from my various sources.
When I try a new recipe for the first time (provided it is successful) I take a picture of the finished product. I then move the recipe from the ‘To Try’ section into the correct category and add the picture. I print the page, add it to the binder, and have a new recipe in my menu!
