One of the fun things on my adoption journey has been to learn new skills that I haven’t had a need to learn in the past.
For the past few months I have started keeping clothes and linens that have gotten a hole in them to encourage me to learn how to sew. It is a skill I would like to have as a parent.
One of the most interesting things on this journey for me is the different skills different people want to have before they embark on the journey. There are so many skills that I have gained in my 30 years of life. Sewing wasn’t one of them.
A couple of weeks ago, I sat down with my grandmother and she taught me how to sew a hole closed.
Once I learned, I took everything out of the closet that needed to be repaired and I got to work! There were so many things in that pile! It’s amazing how much I would have discarded if I had not learned to sew!
Ultimately, there are things that you will know how to do well when you have children and things you will need to learn. For me, with each new skill I learn, my confidence in this decision grows.
