Step 4 - Professional Parenting Class
The next step in the process towards getting my certification to adopt is to take a professional parenting class. I really love this idea. The fact that there has been a class designed around parenting seems almost groundbreaking to me in a sense. If I were not adopting, if I instead were having biological children, where could I take a class like this?
A quick google search shows a ton of options, but if I were not forced to take one, would I have even thought of it? This got me thinking about the best place to offer a parenting class to someone who is interested in one day having their own children. It seems that in high school education we are so preoccupied with preventing teenagers from having children, that we don’t spend enough (any?) time teaching them how to take care of a child if they do have one.
Then I thought about college. If there were a parenting class offered at my college, would I have taken it? Perhaps. Maybe it could be added to the list of classes that were missing from my education that could have been considered “life skills” such as creating an organized schedule and balancing a monthly budget. Which really is the whole reason I started my company and my website, to give people a resources to learn the life skills they may never learn otherwise. Who knows, there may even be a parenting section one day :) for now, I will be learning about it myself.
The next class starts July 20th, which seems so far away! All of the classes between now and then are full, which actually gives me great excitement because it means that there are many people interested in fostering and adopting. That is fantastic!
It also gives me time to prepare my home. There are still many steps between now and the day I am matched with a child.
